    Replacing my window blind cord

My window blinds need new cords.

What's involved? Is this a DIY project or something to hire for?

While it's certainly possible to replace window blind cords yourself, experts don't recommend it. The process can be tedious and challenging. In addition, a broken cord may signify the end of your blinds' useful life, so it's worthwhile to at least consider replacing the blinds themselves.

Window blind materials - whether wood, plastic or metal - don't matter when it comes to replacing the cord. It's more important to determine your blinds' cord system type.

TWO KINDS OF BLIND CORD SYSTEMS

Window treatment service providers say the cost of window blind cord replacement depends on whether the system is easy rise or ultra glide.

Easy rise cord systems lace a cord in a continuous loop, while ultra glide systems run the cord from top to bottom. If you aren't sure what type of cord system you have, call a window treatment specialist. He or she will ask a few questions to help you determine your type.

COST TO REPLACE A WINDOW BLIND CORD

The cost of a service call to replace an easy rise blind cord can range from $50 to $100, with the cord adding about $15 to the total.

However, if you can remove the blinds and bring them to a window treatment company, you can eliminate the service call charge. The labor cost to replace the cord may range from $20 to $50, with extra added for the cord.

Replacing the cord in an ultra glide cord system, however, often requires window treatment specialists to take the blinds with them to replace the cord at their shop or service center. This could result in an extra service call fee if they need to deliver the repaired blinds to you.

When hiring, be sure to search for companies that have positive reviews on a trusted consumer site, and can provide proof of appropriate licensing, insurance and bonding.
