Leather Furniture Shops is one of the great retail success stories in Philadelphia. Founded in 1982, by Allan and Bernice Tunick (their son, Robert joined the business soon after). Leather Furniture Shops arrived on the scene at the time when few stores carried any leather furniture at all. The idea of a leather furniture specialty store was almost unheard of. The Tunicks were dissuaded on all fronts from opening such a store, but Allan Tunick, a second-generation furniture rep, stood firm. He felt confident that if the consumer could only see the remarkable value that leather furniture represented, then a new market could be created.

Leather Furniture Shops opened in the spring of 1982 in a rented 3500 sq. ft. showroom in what was then a drab Center City neighborhood called Old City. Allan’s instincts paid off, and Leather Furniture Shops became an instant hit. People from all over the Philadelphia area came in to buy sofas, sectionals, chairs and recliners. They loved the merchandise, and enjoyed the warm, family atmosphere the Tunicks provided.

Before long, customers came back to buy more leather furniture for other spaces, and brought in their friends, who became loyal customers as well. Soon, they all started asking for other types of furnishings for the home. And they only wanted to buy them from Leather Furniture Shops.

The Tunicks knew they had to expand, and in 1988, purchased a large, multi-story building two doors away, at their current home, at 31 N. 2nd St. Now Leather Furniture Shops had a beautiful 11,000 sq. ft. showroom space. This enabled the Tunicks to feature more and more brands of leather furniture from all over the world, creating for Leather Furniture Shops one of the largest and most impressive selections of leather furniture in the U.S. They were also able to introduce extensive offerings of other furnishings, including tables, lamps, entertainment centers, area rugs and even exquisite bedroom and dining room furniture.

And a funny thing happened along the way. Their Old City neighborhood suddenly became THE hot spot for restaurants, nightlife, and cutting-edge shops and galleries. Leather Furniture Shops fit right in, and has become the go-to source in the Philadelphia area for high-style furniture. Customers are blown away by the vast selection, innovative designs and superior quality. And in this hectic, impersonal world, they enjoy the experience of shopping in the intimate, family-run store. That’s Leather Furniture Shops!
