The most important items when considering what log furniture to purchase are of course appearance, quality and durability. We approach each piece of furniture we build as a piece of art. We use the highest quality materials and have mechanisms in place to ensure each piece of furniture that leaves the shop meets rigorous quality standards.
Our beds are designed such that they can be passed down through the generations - remaining solid and problem free.
- Our beds have at least 5” diameter bed posts and two 3.5” full log side rails on each side for maximum strength and a robust appearance. On our deluxe beds the bed posts are at least 6-7" in diameter with 4.5" full log side rails! We use two coats of lacquer for a beautiful, durable finish.
- We use two full log side rails without any holes or cuts in them and a mattress support system is custom made for log beds - you won't find a more solid, stronger, longer lasting design.
- Our beds have an angle iron mattress support system that is carefully designed to maximize the strength of the bed while not compromising the rustic wood appearance of the bed Please note these are not metal side rails, which are to be avoided.
-The angle iron is well hidden so only the two full log side rails on each side are apparent and our design allows the use of bed skirts.
- The angle iron is secured to posts with a metal-to-metal pivot point, as such the torque generated when someone lays on the bed is not transferred to the connection with the wood and won't loosen over time.
- For the cross members we use one angle iron with a support footing and two 2x4s except for king beds which use two angle irons and three 2x4s.
This metal-to-metal connection will maintain the strength and integrity of the bed frame no matter how many times the bed is disassembled and reassembled.
-Wood frames without metal reinforcement will weaken each time they're disassembled and reassembled. This is because the pine and aspen used to make log furniture is softer wood than what is normally used on contemporary beds.
All our log-to-log connections are tenon and mortise joined - this means the log is tapered down to insert into the other log.
-This adds to strength and appearance
-But we’re careful to not over taper the tenon cuts which can make a log look skinny at the ends and weakens the log.
We carefully choose each of the logs for its character and to compliment the character of the other logs.
-Large or assembly line manufacturers do not take the time to pay attention to this kind of detail
Bed designs to avoid
- Beds with single log side rails will probably not last. There is too much torque put on that single joint. It doesn't matter how big the side rail is because it will be tenonized down to, at most, 2" in diameter. As you can see above we tenonize our logs but over time if there is continuous torque on this joint (which will happen with single side rails every time you get in or out or move in the bed) it will loosen up and won't be easily reparable because the tenon joint won't be snug. With double full log side rails and the angle iron support system we use this torque is eliminated.
- Beds that use the side rails for their mattress support system are also inherently weak because the side rails have sizable holes cut into them to insert the cross members into. On a regular basis we have people come in with broken side rails that are designed this way asking us to make a new side rail for them because theirs has broken where one of the holes are.
Dressers, armoires, desks, etc.
- Made with top quality materials and a careful selection of wood.
- 100 lb European metal rollers are used on all drawers to ensure a lifetime of effortless operation.
- Baltic birch is used for our drawer construction – no particle board
- When you select Aspen furniture we actually only use Aspen for the trim. Aspen logs have a different look than pine but once Aspen is milled it looks very similar to pine. At the same time Aspen is significantly softer than pine so it only makes sense to use pine on the surfaces that need to be durable (tops, drawer fronts, sides) while still getting the look of Aspen by using unmilled logs for the trim.
