In 1799, a Sea Captain’s House was built on Main Street in Old Saybrook, CT. The house was owned by Captain Whittlesey, a civic leader in the Saybrook Colony. His home was known for its Georgian style porch and detailed federal interior. In 1977, Keith Bolles and his family purchased the 4,000 square foot house with the vision of opening a home furnishings store. The business grew and in 1987 several “Barns” were added to the original house. The addition included more furniture showrooms and added space for the hardware shop, office and warehouse. In 1997, the Saybrook Country Barn added another extension for retail and office space. Keith had greater ideas for the store when he bought the piece of property that lies directly across from the stores original building. The new building that was erected on the corner of main street was inspired by Georgian architecture of the mid-19th century, using handcrafted details and materials that would simulate a historic environment.
In 2007, construction started again. An additional 3,000 square feet were added to the backside of the corner property. The store expanded its furniture showroom, hardware shop, office and warehouse space. The “original” Georgian buildingwas doubled in size to house the Curtain Shop, the Rug Shop, and a Martha Stewart furniture gallery. Two other buildings were erected to complete the look of a village. The newer buildings offer magnificent furniture showrooms, a woman’s boutique, and a innovative and sophisticated restaurant.
The entire complex now covers more than 40,000 square feet and has become a shopping destination.
