There is an old motto that you should always have a good bed and a good pair of shoes, because if you aren't in one, you're in the other. It's true that we spend a substantial amount of our lives in bed and consequently it makes sense to make the right investment when buying a new one.

There are so many different styles, sizes and types of bed, it can be very time consuming and confusing to go bed shopping.

Some divan beds can offer storage space or even a television set in the foot-board, but often come with a standard mattress, which means compromising on your comfort.

One of the best ways to get the combination just right is to buy a separate bed frame and mattress. Getting the choice right takes some time and thought, however, so here is a four point buyer's guide to help you make your selection.

Measure Your Space

If you are able to shuffle things around to make a little more room, then it is worth the effort to fit in a larger bed.

That extra six or twelve inches of width between a double, king-size or super-king size bed can make all the difference when you have a partner who likes to spread themselves out while sleeping.

Make allowances for the fact that some bed frames may be an inch or two wider than the mattress size, depending upon their design.

Don't Judge Comfort By Looks Alone

Looking at the style, colour and design of a bed frame and mattress is all very well, but there is no substitute for testing out the bed by lying on it.

Try the bed from every possible angle and position to make sure that it will suit your needs, not just for sleeping, but for relaxing, watching TV, reading, working on the laptop whatever you want to use the bed for.

If you intend to make your final purchase online to save money, you can cheat a little by visiting several High Street suppliers to physically try out the beds first, then select your favourite and buy online.

Look At Your Room Decor

If you are aiming to completely redecorate and refurbish the bedroom, then you have free rein to pick anything your heart desires when it comes to a new bed. However, if you just want to change the sleeping quarters and leave the rest of the room as it is and then your best bet is to choose a frame that will blend well with your current room style and colour.

Traditional carved dark or very light woods are great for a shabby chic style, while leather or suedette are more contemporary and neutral. Wrought iron can add some romance to the room, with floral or chintzy fabrics.

Utilise Under-bed Storage

If storage space is an issue, then a wooden or leather bed frame with drawers underneath the base is a terrific solution to the problem.

These drawers are large enough to take some volume of items, so are ideal for stowing away bedding or for stashing shoes and clothing. Many bed suppliers, such as Archers Sleepcentre, have a full range of bed frames with storage, but do consider how much room is needed for drawers to open fully and take this into account with your measurements.
