Sometimes the most difficult part of decorating is getting started; deciding where and how to begin can be overwhelming. Fortunately, the basics of room design can be broken down into three simple rules of thumb that make decorating any room as easy as 1-2-3. Use these rules to tackle your home one room at a time as your budget allows. It usually makes sense to begin with the rooms you use for entertaining, such as the living room, dining room or family room.
I like call these rules the “golden keys”, as they can help you unlock the secret to a beautiful home.
Placement
The placement of your furniture is just as important as the way it feels in terms of creating an inviting room. Whether you’re placing seating options in a family room or a mattress set in the bedroom, take care that your pieces are easily accessible as well as visually appealing. A chair that’s difficult to get to, in a cramped space or spaced too far from other seating to allow for conversation will not create a welcoming space.
Center Stage
Every room needs a focal point: a piece of furniture, area rug, or other compelling piece that anchors the room and draws your eye inside. Without an anchor, a room may feel cavernous, cold or disjointed. With an anchor piece, the room leads you in with an easy sense of flow and purpose.
Accent
Once you have everything in place with a clear focal point, it’s time to add the finishing touch. Accents can be used to tell your story – you might base your accents around a favorite color, place or thing, family themes, or simply an eclectic mix of stuff you love. The right accents will bring warmth and character to a room, adding a “welcome home” feel for all who step inside.
