Every year more than 100,000 pairs of skis end up in the bin. Designer Jakob Lederer however has taken it upon himself to turn this unwanted snow gear into innovative furniture.
The 33-year-old first created a garden bench out of recycled skis and has gone on to build stools, sun loungers, rocking chairs and tables.
Lederer has thankfully assured buyers that the chairs would not give way anytime soon. Skis are made out of plastic, wood or metal layers held together with resin, providing a stiffness and solidity very much suited to furniture making.
The designer is constantly on the lookout for unwanted skis and is particularly partial to older models from the 1950s and 60s. Rather than let broken skis clutter up your house, Lederer is more than happy to collect them and give them a new lease of life.
