Is it possible to install a drop-in style kitchen sink on an under-mount countertop?
We currently have a very nice top-mount kitchen sink installed, but we are planning to change the countertop.
The new counter will have an under-mount style sink.
I really want to keep our sink.

Standard-type kitchen sinks come in three basic mounting styles.
Here are some features of each to help answer this question:
1. Top-mount or drop-in kitchen sinks usually have thick, rounded edges and sit on the topside of the counter. The finished edge creates a nice professional look where the sink meets the counter.
2. Under-mount kitchen sinks usually have a thin and flat unfinished edge that mounts to the underside of the counter. This thin edge creates a nice tight seal between counter and the sink. Because of the rounded edge, if you try to undermount a drop-in style sink, a larger unattractive gap may be created where the sink meets the underside of the counter.
3. Some special kitchen sinks are set up for dual-mounting and can be used for either top or bottom installations.
Bottom line: Check with your local plumbing inspector and sink manufacturer before you start the job to make sure you don't make a big mess in your new kitchen.
